RESP score for VV ECMO survival

Tool to predict survival in patients receiving Venovenous (VV) Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

About

The RESP score is a validated clinical tool to predict in-hospital survival in patients receiving Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for respiratory failure.

RESP score is calculated based 12 pre-ECMO clinical variables that have independent association with hospital survival. These variables were identified in a study (Schmidt 2014) involving 2,355 patients in the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry who received ECMO for acute respiratory failure. The score was additionally validated in a cohort of 140 patients.

Total RESP Score Risk Class Survival
≥6 I 92%
3 to 5 II 76%
-1 to 2 III 57%
-5 to -2 IV 33%
≤-6 V 18%
