CCS-SAF Symptom Score
Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Severity of Atrial Fibrillation (SAF) scale describes severity of symptoms in atrial fibrillation.
Class 0
Asymptomatic with respect to atrial fibrillation (AF)
Class 1
Symptoms of AF have minimal effect on quality of life
• Minimal or infrequent symptoms
• Single episode of AF without syncope or heart failure
Class 2
Symptoms of AF have minor effect on quality of life
• Mild awareness of symptoms in patients with persistent or permanent AF
• Rare episodes (less than a few per year) in patients with paroxysmal or intermittent AF
Class 3
Symptoms of AF have moderate effect on quality of life
• Moderate awareness of symptoms on most days with persistent or permanent AF
• More common episodes (more than every few months) or more severe symptoms, or both in patients with paroxysmal or intermittent AF
Class 4
Symptoms of AF have severe effect on quality of life
• Very unpleasant symptoms in patients with persistent or permanent AF
• Frequent or highly symptomatic episodes in patients with paroxysmal or intermittent AF
• Syncope due to AF
• Heart failure due to AF
